Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, widely known as Thalapathy Vijay, has been issued a fatwa by a senior Islamic cleric for allegedly disrespecting Islamic values during an iftar party held in Chennai.
The fatwa was issued by Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilly, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ) and Chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta. The cleric accused Vijay of using the iftar gathering for political gain while allowing individuals who do not observe Islamic practices—such as “alcoholics and gamblers”—to attend the religious event.
“Vijay Thalapathy is trying to enter politics by exploiting Muslim sentiments,” said Maulana Razvi. “In his films, like Beast, he portrayed Muslims as terrorists. Now he is attempting to appear friendly to the community ahead of elections.”
Razvi stated that the actor's actions were seen as an attempt at religious appeasement, and he urged Muslims in Tamil Nadu to refrain from supporting Vijay or involving him in religious functions.
Local Group Files Police Complaint
The controversy intensified after the Tamil Nadu Sunnath Jamath lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner on March 11, criticizing the Iftar party hosted by Vijay on March 7 at the YMCA Grounds. The group claimed that the event was poorly organized and included individuals who disrespected the sanctity of Ramadan.
Syed Kous, treasurer of the organization, said:
“The event included individuals who do not fast or follow Islamic traditions. Their presence has deeply offended the sentiments of Tamil Nadu’s Muslim community.”
The group has demanded legal action against Vijay to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
No Response Yet from Vijay
Despite the public backlash and formal complaints, Vijay has not made any official statement regarding the fatwa or the allegations. He continues to prepare for a full-fledged political entry and is expected to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections.
Notably, Vijay also recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, signaling his intent to engage deeply with both legal and community issues.
