On February 27, 2026, strong earthquake tremors were felt across Kolkata and surrounding areas in West Bengal at around 1:22 pm local time, prompting a wave of panic among residents and workers. The seismic activity was powerful enough to interrupt a public event where Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar was speaking, and video clips of the moment quickly circulated online.

Tremors interrupted a public address by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar in Kolkata during the February 27 earthquake.

A short video shared by news agencies shows the minister at the podium when the shaking began. For a moment, the lights and camera equipment at the venue visibly trembled, and the minister even paused mid-speech and asked whether he should stop.

What Happened During the Earthquake

According to initial reports from meteorological and seismic monitoring agencies, the quake had a magnitude of approximately 4.9 to 5.5 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located in Bangladesh, close to the India–Bangladesh border, with tremors radiating into West Bengal and causing noticeable shaking in Kolkata.

People across the city felt the ground shake for several seconds. In many areas, furniture, ceiling fans, and lights visibly moved, leading workers, residents, and event attendees to evacuate buildings as a precaution.

Public and Official Reaction

The video from the event where the earthquake struck drew significant attention on social media, as netizens shared clips and reactions from their own locations in and around Kolkata. Many residents posted about feeling the tremors, describing the experience as sudden and unexpected.

Authorities in West Bengal confirmed that the tremors were widely felt, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or major structural damage following the quake. Monitoring continues, and residents have been advised to follow safety precautions in the event of after-shocks.

Why This Matters

Earthquakes of this scale are relatively uncommon in Kolkata, though the broader region near the India–Bangladesh border is known to experience periodic seismic activity. Events like this highlight the importance of preparedness and structural safety, especially in densely populated urban centres
